From Average to Excellent: Academic Writing Tips for Students

Academic writing is an essential skill among students of schools, colleges and universities. Academic writing is what will enable you to put your thoughts across professionally and in papers, assignments, research and reports. Academic writing on the other hand poses a challenge to most students because they are expected to think and write properly and in a formal language.

The good thing is that academic writing is not a talent that cannot be nurtured, but is a skill that may be acquired, through drilling and practicing through proper techniques. By following the strategies that are few, students will be able to write better papers and articulate their thoughts more easily.

One thing to observe is that you have to learn the subject before you start.

An individual should have the capacity to understand his/her work topic comprehensively before crafting any academic paper. The majority of the students would soon begin to write without having much idea of the question being asked leading to the irrelevancy of the responses.

Read on the topic content to determine the key points. What is the question that you are being asked to explain, analyze and discuss? In case the necessity arose, you can break down the topic into smaller parts so that you can manage each part properly in writing.

Your writing will be more effective and narrow when you know what you are talking about.

Plan Your Writing:

Planning is one of the most important stages of an academic work. Without a clear plan, then it is highly probable that your ideas will fall all over and become difficult to track.

An outline is the easiest thing to come up with before you begin writing. Your outline could be the introduction, all the main points that you would like to discuss and the conclusion. Writing out a plan of what you will be writing will not only ensure that you have a smooth flow of what you are writing but it will also ensure that you do not miss any important detail. There can be a difference between simply setting aside five or ten minutes to plan your writing and it can be far clear.

Write a Strong Introduction:

Introduction is the first section of your academic paper and what sets the tone of your further writing. A good introduction should also contain the description of the matter, in concise and informs the reader of what he or she is going to get in the paper.

It then commences with a general observation on the topic and then you start slowly by slowly on what you really have to say. This high level of thinking is what is known as thesis statement. It is the reason that you are writing that paper, and it makes the rest of your writing.

With an interesting introduction, the reader is able to get a good understanding of your topic within a very short time.Be direct and formal with the use of language.

Academic writing should be vivid, easy, and formal. Slang, colloquialism and very casual language should be avoided. Instead, listen to professional and decent writing.

You need not have very complex words. In fact, you can make your writing stronger with the help of a simple and clear language. It is necessary to express ideas in academic writing and not confuse the reader.Short and well structured sentences also increase readability.

Organize Your Paragraphs:

All your academic paper paragraphs should be devoted to one idea. In a well-written paragraph, the writer usually begins the paragraph with a topic sentence in which he or she presents the general idea of the paragraph.

The topic sentence is followed by some evidence or examples of your idea and then some explaining is done. This will help the readers get to know more about your argument.

The well defined paragraph structure enables you to read through your writing easily, and enables your ideas to follow a logical flow one point to the other.

Offer Evidence to Prove your Ideas. There must not be any academic writing without evidence to support what you are arguing about. You should not only discuss your opinion but provide facts, examples and research findings or the opinions of the experts.

One of the things that will render your writing more convincing is having a credible writing; it should be founded on reliable information. It also shows that you have made your own research on the subject.

At that, it is necessary to keep in mind that you should cite your sources in the required academic manner.

 Revise and Edit Your Work:

Never send your first draft the moment you have written it. You have to take time and look through what you have done. Editing helps to locate the mistakes of grammar, sentence structures that lack sense, and weak areas.Read extensively on what you have written and ensure you have logical flow of ideas. Watch out on spelling errors, punctuations and repetitions. You can also read what you are writing aloud and see whether it is sounding or not.Quality in your academic paper can be added by proper editing.

Practice Regularly:

Academic writing is improved with practice. The greater the amount of writing you write the more self-assured and competent you become. Trying to write short essays, summaries or studying notes on different issues.Books and academic papers may also help you to understand the structure of academic writing excellently. Eventually you will develop your own style of writing and improve the method of expression.

Conclusion:

Academic writing is an essential part of writing that should be mastered by all the students. Being familiar with the topic, planning out what you will say, writing to the point and using a paragraph, supporting your argument with evidence and rewriting your essay all can do a lot to enhance your general academic writing.

One should not forget writing is a process of learning. Patience and practice and dedication used on the students can make them learn to write well academically and this will make them succeed in life and in their studies.
